Richard and Riffat - a great musical couple, maestros bonded together will be presenting the best of the best at UPMA Banquet 2017.
Riffat Sultana channels the musical wisdom of 500 years and eleven generations of master vocalists from India and Pakistan. She is the first woman from her family's musical lineage to publicly perform in the west. She has performed and recorded with such luminaries as Quincy Jones, Egyptian singer Hakim, and toured with DJ Cheb i Sabbah. Riffat performs a wide variety of traditional and modern material from the Indian sub-continent, including, Sufi, Ghazal, Qawwali, Bhangra, and Bollywood classics. Playing with her today is her husband Richard Michos playing guitar, along with the Bay area’s best tabla Maestro Gurdeep Singh, and the very talented Vineel Krishna on keyboards. Highlighting Riffat’s performances are devotional, and ecstatic Sufi songs to great saints like Shahabaz Qalander and Baba Bule Shah, sure to move your heart, soul, and feet!

Richard Michos holds a music degree from UC San Diego, and has studied jazz and blues and rock guitar with several teachers including Tuck Andres. He studied Indian classical music with Riffat's father, Ustad Salamat Ali Khan, and Sufi music with her brothers Shafqat and Sukhawat Ali. He is an established studio guitarist, performer, and music instructor in the SF Bay Area and beyond. Richard has also, recorded and produced albums for numerous artists, including Riffat Sultana, Arabic vilonist Georges Lammam, and the world music group Shabaz.
