Omar Sosa Trio feat Trilok Gurtu & Paolo Fresu in San Francisco
Omar Sosa concludes his residency with his most global small ensemble, a true power trio that brings together masters steeped in an international continuum of sounds. Playing piano, Fender Rhodes and keyboards, Sosa sets the parameters with his striking harmonies, flashing rhythmic passages and beautifully mutable melodic flights. Sardinian trumpeter and flugelhornist Paolo Fresu combines a strikingly pure tone with an arranger’s architectural attention to form and texture. He and Sosa have documented their decade-long collaboration with the live 2007 quintet session Promise, 2012’s moody, emotionally charged Alma with Brazilian cellist Jaques Morelenbaum, and their new duo project Eros. Trilok Gurtu studied classical Hindustani music growing up in Mumbai, and established himself as a percussion visionary on recordings by John McLaughlin, Oregon, Joe Zawinul, and Tabla Beat Science with Zakir Hussain and Bill Laswell. A pioneering artist combining elements from classical Indian drumming and Western percussion, he provides a vast rhythmic palette for Sosa and Fresu, players both intensely alive to the beguiling force of a single sustained note. The trio has performed together at festivals around Europe, and makes its US debut with this concert.
