The Living Legend Gaan Yogini Dr. Prabha Atre
The senior-most representative of Kirana Gharana, has a concert singing career of over 50 years.
Gifted with a mellifluous voice; Prabha Atre learned under the traditional Guru-Shishya Parampara from Late Sureshbhau Mane and his sister legendary vocalist Hirabai Badodekar.
Recipient of several awards including the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Sangeet Natak Akademi awards, her brilliance is unusual as her erudition in music is as important a facet of her personality as her singing.
Prabha Atre had a short stint as a singing stage-actress in the early days of her career. She played her roles in a line-up of Marathi theatre classics, which included socials and mythological like Sanshay-Kallol, Maanaapamaan, Saubhadra, and Vidyaharan.
She has contributed to popularizing Indian classical vocal music at a global level. She is competent in various musical genres such as Khayal, Thumri, Dadra, Ghazal, geet, Natyasangeet, and bhajans.
She has also invented new Raags such as Apurva Kalyan, Darbari Kauns, Patdeep-Malhar, Shiv Kali, Tilang-bhairav, Ravi Bhairav, and Madhur-kauns.
She is a writer of several books such as ‘Swaramayee’ and ‘Suswaraalee’ which are a compilation of articles on music while ‘Swaraanginee’ and ‘Swaranjanee’ are compilations of her compositions. ‘Enlightening the listener’ and ‘Along the Path of Music’ capture her thoughts on Indian musical tradition in English.
She has also established Swarmayee Gurukul which strives to bridge the gap between the academic institutions and the traditional Guru Shishya Parampara and plans to nurture talented students into professionals.
