4. Santa’s Cable Car Ride

While Santa was on a test run to prepare for his journey on Christmas Eve, one of the parts on his sleigh needed repair. The only mechanic that could create a custom fitted piece, other than the elves at the North Pole, work for the Market Street Railway. While it’s in the shop, the SFMTA has loaned Santa a cable car decked out in holiday décor for a free photoshoot in Fisherman’s Wharf!Santa will be stationed on Cable Car 12 on Wednesday, December 21st, at the Beach and Hyde Turnaround in Fisherman’s Wharf to take photos with San Francisco families.

5.  Giant menorah lightings at Union Square

The Bill Graham Menorah Project is gearing up for its 47th annual giant menorah lighting and display! A 25-foot menorah will glow over Union Square every night of Hanukkah, from December 18-25.

On the first night (Dec. 18), you can enjoy fun activities, food, music and more for “Bill Graham Menorah Day” from 2-6pm. This celebration will accompany the first lighting ceremony at 5pm. Enjoy a variety of kids’ crafts and shows, plus performances from Jerry’s Kosher Deli, Saul Kaye, and Ari Lesser.

6. Train Of Lights Parlor Car Departing Sunol

The Train of Lights has been a long-standing tradition for many families for more than a decade. For the Train of Lights, our Dining Car, x-SP 10040, will be converted to a Parlor Car. This will be a Private Seating car, with cookies, snacks, and beverages served in the car, by our car attendants. Only passengers with Parlor Car tickets and wristbands can come in this car. (There will NOT be a dining service in the car during the Train of Lights.)

What to Expect

On these evening trains, this ride is all about the lights! Enjoy the ride from some of the best seats on the train, in a car appointed with the original Cuban Mahogany interior. Built in 1928, and restored to its service appearance on the long-distance trains on the San Joaquin Daylight in the 1950s.

7. Glowfari animal lantern festival at Oakland Zoo

Hundreds of gigantic hand-painted animal lanterns have been placed throughout the Oakland Zoo’s campus, making for a totally unique tour of the zoo by night. The spectacular lanterns are arranged throughout a mile-long pathway, taking you through a landscape of kangaroos and koalas; a tour of the California coast featuring jellies, otters, and whales; and a trip back in time with a megalodon shark tunnel and an enormous T. rex.

10. Fairy Winterland At Childrens Fairyland

Evenings in late December sparkle with the return of Fairy Winterland at Children’s Fairyland in Oakland. This magical multicultural event brings families together to share in the season’s festivities and explore decked out halls gleaming with thousands of twinkly lights.

Flying in from the North Pole, Black Santa is coming to the Town. Visitors have the magical chance to visit Black Santa before his big night or say “thank you” the days following Christmas. After sharing holiday wishes and snapping photos, children receive a special treat and can join him each evening at 6:30 p.m. for the Festival of Lights Parade. While at the park, drop your child’s “Letter to Santa” in the special mailbox at the Chapel of Peace. We’ll make sure he sees every single one. 

While you walk through Fairy Winterland, enjoy a culturally-inclusive holiday scavenger hunt, special performances, and a snow flurry in the Old West Junction. And, yes, you’ll be able to cozy up with a complimentary cup of hot cocoa and cider

Make sure that you get your Magic Key (in the current Fairyberry Red color), they are available for $3 each in the park’s gift shop and from our online store.

Here are some basics you need to know for your visit:

  • Effective Friday July 15, 2022 masks are optional for all guests.; 
  • Please stay home if anyone in your group is feeling sick on the day you’re scheduled to visit;
  • While in line, please keep a safe distance from other guests at all times;
  • Hand-sanitizing stations are located throughout the park for your convenience;
  • Restrooms are now “single group use.” Be patient. Take turns;
  • Fairy Winterland hours are from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. 
  • Shoes must be worn at all times by all guests;
  • Play, be free!

11. 22-foot gingerbread house at the Fairmont Hotel

 13. Christmas in the Park in San Jose

Christmas in the Park is back this year! San Jose is decked out in tens of thousands of sparkling lights, decorations, and more prepared by community groups. Blinky’s Illuminated Holiday is their beloved drive-thru musical journey, which takes you through a mind-blowing light tunnel and a synchronized light show with millions of colors.
